Robert Selkowitz and Nancy Winternight maintain studios at Ashokan, New York near the historic Woodstock art colony in the Catskill Mountains; and at Cap LeMoine, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Their associations with both of these areas go back to the early 1970s, and they continue to draw inspiration from the unique natural beauty and energy for renewal and creativity found in each place.

Winternight Gallery & Sunlight Studio is the artists' Ashokan residence situated between a mountain and the Ashokan Reservoir. The two-story renovated carriage house and Victorian farmhouse hold studios and gallery spaces. It is the home base from which Robert paints pastels outdoors in spring and fall and paints oils indoors during the winter. Nancy uses her kitchen-connected studio to do her production work and for her more meditative paintings.

The site of the artists' studios and galleries at Cap LeMoine is spectacular. Two century-old farmhouses share an acre of land on the world famous Cabot Trail, with a panoramic oceanfront view of the Gulf of St Lawrence spreading beyond their front yard. They watch whales from their porch, and indeed the stretch of coast they inhabit is one of the best places anywhere for viewing whales from shore.

The shore of western Cape Breton Island, Inverness County, is home to fishers and fiddle players and colorful folk artists. The sea, sky and landscape are illuminated in crystal clear light and the air is tinged with the scent of wild roses. The people enjoy an intact folk culture embracing Scottish and French Acadian strains. Gaelic is enjoying a revival and the square dances are spontaneous celebrations of Celtic fiddling. Handcrafts are cherished.
This is where Robert and Nancy work all summer. Robert paints dozens of pastels from nature, many within five miles of his studio along the rocky coast and in the fishing harbours. Nancy works with paint and fabric and found materials. They established 'Galerie Esprit de la Mer' / Spirit o' the Sea Gallery, in 1999.
